Drachenwald kingdom awards I promised the Shire that I would give a description of the major Drachenwald awards, to encourage you to recommend people all over the show! The recommendation form is on the web: go to http://www.drachenwald.sca.org and click on the Dragon’s Tale link, then “Their Royal Majesties” at the top of the page. Click on “Send a recommendation to their Majesties” and the form will be loaded. Here are the awards, then; this isn’t all of them, but it’s the major ones; consider them as something to aim at, or a context in which to make recommendations! In service to Shire and Kingdom, Jehanne GENERAL SCA AWARDS Award of Arms. The basic SCA award, usually the first one anyone receives. It’s not for anything specific; in the words of King Matthew, this is conferred on someone “whose contribution [to their branch and/or the Kingdom] is overwhelmingly positive.” This is general to the SCA, and allows the recipient to style themselves “Lady X” or “Lord Y.” Grant of Arms. Sort of like an Award of Arms, only much more high-powered and usually given to people who already have a number of other awards and are fairly senior in the Society. Peerage awards: Laurel, Pelican or Chivalry. This entitles the recipient to style themselves “Master” or “Mistress” in the case of Laurel or Pelican, or “Sir” in the case of a knight. This is pretty much as high as you can go in the SCA. These are polling orders: you will only be elevated to the peerage if the other Laurels or Pelicans or whatever think that you are worthy. Laurel is for expertise and teaching in a particular area of the Arts or Sciences; Pelican is for service, usually organisational; and Knighthood is for fighting. Unlike Crown, which is an office you hold for six months after winning a tourney, a Peerage award recognises sustained effort and ability in the Society over a long period, as well as exceptional chivalry, courtesy and teaching skills. DRACHENWALD AWARDS Most of the wording of these Drachenwald awards is taken from the Drachenwald Book of Laws. ARMIGEROUS AWARDS Some awards confer an automatic Grant on a recipient who doesn’t already have one. Drachenwald awards which have a Grant of Arms attached include Orden Des Lindquistringes. Presented to those people who have distinguished themselves by long and extraordinary services to the Kingdom. Order of the Panache. Presented to those people who have distinguished themselves by long and consistent excellence in the Arts and who have also constantly made their expertise available to the various members of the Kingdom. Order of the Silver Guard. Presented to those members who have distinguished themselves by chivalry and prowess at arms. Order of The Dragon's Steel. Presented to those members of the foil, epee and schlager fighting community, who exemplify courtesy, chivalry, dedicated patronage to the arts and sciences and show continual service to local branches and the Kingdom of Drachenwald. NON-ARMIGEROUS AWARDS i.e. these don’t have a Grant of Arms attached. The Popular Company of Sojourners. Presented at the discretion of the Crown to those members departing the Kingdom, who have contributed to Drachenwald. The King's Order of the Companions of Albion. The Albion is presented by the King to those of His subjects that He may deem worthy of recognition for exemplary chivalry, courtesy or service. The Queen's Order of Courtesy. Conferred by the Queen of Drachenwald upon such people as She deems worthy, by reason of their exemplary chivalry, courtesy or service to the people of all ranks in this Kingdom and in the Society at Large. The Dragon's Tear. This Award is given at the discretion of the Crown to the autocrat(s) of an extraordinarily successful event. The Order of the Dragon's Bowle. This is awarded at the discretion of the Crown to those who have displayed notable attention to authenticity. The Order of the Dragon's Jewel. This award will be given to children (under 12 years of age) who have distinguished themselves through exemplary behavior or service. The Order of the Dragon's Pride. Given to children (under 12 years of age) who have distinguished themselves through exemplary work in the arts and sciences. Return to the general articles index
